Why Tianzi Mountain is a must-see
If Yuanjiajie is the postcard, Tianzi Mountain is the panorama. Sitting on the parks northwest rim at around 1,262 m, it offers the widest, highest vantage points over the quartz-sandstone forest — the same pillars that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar, seen from above rather than below.
The name means "Son of Heaven" (天子), after Xiang Dakun, a Tujia leader who rebelled against the Ming court here in the 14th century. Today the imperial metaphor lives on in viewpoint names like "Emperor Pen Peak" and "West Sea of Rocks".
What makes Tianzi special is the cloud. After rain the valleys fill with a silver sea of clouds and only the pillar tops poke through — a sight that pulls photographers up before dawn. Build in a buffer day; the peaks are shy when its foggy.

Imperial Brush Peak
御笔峰
A cluster of slender pillars said to look like the emperors writing brushes. It is one of the most photographed silhouettes in all of Zhangjiajie.
West Sea of Rocks
西海石林
A vast amphitheatre of stone peaks dropping into the mist. Walk the railing path at sunrise and the rock forest seems to float.
Fairy Scattered Flowers
仙女散花
A viewpoint where a lone peak appears to hold a basket of flowers — best lit in the soft gold of late afternoon.
Tianzi cable car up
天子山索道
A 2,000 m cable car that lifts you from the valley to the Tianzi ridge in about 20 minutes — the most scenic (and queueless) way up.

Classic viewpoint loop

Hiking descent

Travel tips
Ride the cable car, not the bus
The Tianzi cable car is the scenic way up and skips the long shuttle transfer from the East Gate.
Weather is everything
Peaks often vanish in fog. Build in a buffer day; mornings after rain give the best sea of clouds.
Bring water and snacks
Food on the ridge is limited and pricey. Carry at least 1 L water per person.
Arrive for sunrise
The sea of clouds is best 06:30–08:00. Stay near the East Gate and enter at opening.
Pair with Yuanjiajie
Tianzi and Yuanjiajie share the same plateau system — do them on one ticket across two mornings.
How to get there
City → Wulingyuan East Gate. From Zhangjiajie city or the railway station take a bus to the East Gate (武陵源东门), about 40–60 min, ¥13.
East Gate → Tianzi cable car. Inside the park, take the shuttle to the Tianzi Mountain cable car station (~40 min).
Cable car up. Ride to the Tianzi ridge in ~20 minutes, then follow the rim signs.
Alternative entry. You can also reach Tianzi via the Yuanjiajie plateau and the connecting shuttle.
No metro or ride-hail inside the park — the official shuttle buses are the only way between gates. Keep your passport for ticket check.
