A clear, cold mountain stream the whole way. In summer its the perfect place to cool off your feet; the water is drinkable at source but bring your own bottle.
Why Golden Whip Stream is a must-see
Most of Zhangjiajie is about looking down from high ridges. Golden Whip Stream is the opposite — you walk through the stone forest at its base, the stream gurgling beside you and the peaks towering overhead. Its the most relaxed way to feel the landscape.
The path is almost entirely flat and paved, following the water for about 7.5 km from the East Gate area to Shadao Ravine. Wild macaques live along the banks, and on quiet mornings the only sounds are water and birdsong.
Because its easy and shaded, its the best first walk for families with kids, travelers with limited mobility, or anyone arriving on a low-energy day. You can do the full 7.5 km or turn back at any point.

Golden Whip Rock
金鞭岩
A 380 m quartz-sandstone pinnacle at the trails start — the peak that named the stream, said to look like a golden whip pointing at the sky.
Scholar Rock
秀才藏书
A pillar that locals say looks like a scholar holding books. The naming games along the stream are half the fun.
Monkey Hill
猴子坡
The most reliable spot to see wild macaques. Keep your distance, never feed them, and zip your bags — they are bold and quick.
Shadao Ravine
砂刀沟
The trails far end, where the canyon narrows and the cliffs close in. A calm, photogenic finale before you shuttle back.

Classic out-and-back

Travel tips
Best for families
Flat, paved and shaded — the only Zhangjiajie trail comfortable for strollers and older travelers.
Mind the macaques
Wild monkeys along the banks. Never feed them, hide your snacks, and keep bags zipped.
Bring water
There are few vendors mid-trail. Carry at least 1 L per person, more in summer.
Wear good shoes
The path is flat but can be slick after rain. Closed shoes with grip beat sandals.
Pair with Yuanjiajie
End the walk at the Yuanjiajie shuttle and ride up — a natural full-day combo.
How to get there
City → Wulingyuan East Gate. Bus from Zhangjiajie city or railway station, about 40–60 min, ¥13.
Enter the park. The Golden Whip Stream trailhead is a short walk inside the East Gate.
Walk the stream. The path is clearly signed and mostly flat.
Return by shuttle. From Shadao Ravine back to the East Gate.
No metro or ride-hail inside the park — the official shuttle buses are the only way between gates. Keep your passport for ticket check.
