Huangshizhai

黄石寨 · The View That Defines Zhangjiajie

A compact cliff-top loop with the parks most-quoted viewpoint — "He who has not been to Huangshizhai has not seen Zhangjiajie." A 360° ring of stone pillars with a cable car both ways.

At a glance

Huangshizhai (黄石寨) is a flat-topped sandstone mesa in the Wulingyuan core of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Hunan, China, about 1,080 m high. A circular cliff-edge trail gives a 360° panorama of the surrounding quartz-sandstone peaks, and a cable car makes it an easy half-day even for non-hikers.

Why Huangshizhai is a must-see

Huangshizhai is the classic "overview" stop. Unlike the long ridge walks, its a loop on a flat mesa top, so you get the full 360° ring of pillars without climbing all day. Locals say if you skip it, you havent really seen Zhangjiajie.

A cable car runs both ways from the East Gate area, so you can ride up, stroll the level loop, and ride down — perfect for travelers who want the view without the sweat. Theres also a stair path if you prefer to walk.

Because the loop is short and paved, its one of the best spots for a relaxed sunrise or sunset among the peaks. Give it a clear morning and the whole stone forest opens up below you.

The loop is exposed with little shade. Carry at least 1 L per person.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Huangshizhai, and how do I get there?

Huangshizhai is in the Wulingyuan core of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, about 40 km from the city. Take a bus to the East Gate (around ¥13, 40–60 min), then the park shuttle to the Huangshizhai cable car station.

Is Huangshizhai hard to climb?

Not if you take the cable car — it runs both ways, about 8 minutes each, so you can enjoy the 360° loop with almost no climbing. There is also a ~4,000-step stair path if you prefer to walk up.

Why is Huangshizhai famous?

Its the classic overview of Zhangjiajie — a flat mesa-top loop with a full 360° ring of sandstone pillars. The local saying goes: "He who has not been to Huangshizhai has not seen Zhangjiajie."

How long should I plan for Huangshizhai?

A half day is plenty: cable car up, about an hour around the level loop, cable car down. Pair it with Golden Whip Stream below for a full day.

What is the best time of year to visit?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) give the clearest panoramas. Go on a clear morning — fog flattens the view, and the exposed loop gets hot in summer.

Do I need my passport and can I use cards?

Bring your passport for park tickets. Cards are unreliable at small vendors, so carry cash (RMB). Alipay works with a linked international card.
